8,000 Nigerian bank customers have lost a combined N20 million to a sophisticated SMS scam in the past 48 hours. It started with a simple text: 'Your account has been selected for a reward.' But what happens next won't be so rewarding.
How This Scam Works
Scammers send a text or WhatsApp message claiming the recipient's account has been chosen for a cash reward. To collect, they need to verify their account details by clicking a link and filling out a form. The link leads to a fake website designed to steal login credentials and banking information.
Who Is Being Targeted
Bank customers across Nigeria, aged 25-50, are being targeted, particularly those with accounts at large commercial banks.
