3,600 New Zealanders lost a combined NZ$3.6 million to a fake bill scam in the last 48 hours. One victim, a 35-year-old Auckland resident, reported receiving a phishing email disguised as a legitimate invoice from a well-known company. What makes this scam so effective?

How This Scam Works

Scammers send fake invoices or bills via email, often using the logo and branding of real companies to trick victims into paying. The emails typically contain a sense of urgency, claiming that a payment is overdue or that a service will be cut off if not paid immediately.

Who Is Being Targeted

The scam appears to be targeting small business owners and individuals in New Zealand, particularly those in the Auckland region. It's not clear why this group is being targeted, but it's possible that scammers are taking advantage of the region's high population density and business activity.

Red Flags to Watch For

🚩 Urgent or threatening language in emails or phone calls 🚩 Requests for payment via wire transfer or cryptocurrency 🚩 Spoofed or fake company logos and branding 🚩 Poor grammar or spelling in emails or invoices 🚩 Unexpected or unfamiliar invoices or bills

What to Do If You've Been Hit

  1. Report the scam to the relevant authorities, such as the New Zealand Consumer Protection agency
  2. Contact your bank or financial institution to stop any pending payments
  3. Change your email and online account passwords
  4. Be cautious of follow-up emails or phone calls, as scammers may try to trick you into paying again
